Cite Them Right is the best platform for evaluating your references.

Well, that is obviously true [both authors laugh]. I'm Richard Pears, I'm one of the authors of Cite Them Right. I'm Graham Shields, also one of the authors of Cite Them Right, and we're going to play: 'Cite Them Right: True or False?'.

Citations are the complete references listed at the end of your essay.

False. Citations are a way of giving an indication, a short, brief indication, in your text, that you've used work from somebody else. But you will always have the full reference in your reference list, or bibliography at the end of your work.

A reference list is a complete list of all the sources cited in your essay.

It is indeed. The reference list is a full list. The complete list of all those items.

All those on the material that you've referred to within your assignment.

A reference list is usually found in the footnotes of an essay.

False. So footnotes can be used in some referencing styles as a way of indicating by you've got a citation. So you might put a number in the text and then you would have a short citation in the footnote.

But there's always the full reference in the reference list or the bibliography at the end of your text.

A bibliography provides information to help the reader identify only the work that has been cited.

[Graham points to Richard] False. Well, I'm going to say partly. Partly.

Partly. Yeah. Because a bibliography, if you depend on the referencing style you use, if you're using Harvard style, the sources that you've cited directly in your text or refer to those would be in the reference list.

But we also say if your tutor wants you to to include a bibliography, that's all the sources you've cited, but also the things you've read, because in reading around a subject, those ideas are going into your head. And and so it might be important for your tutor to know that if there are three major authors in the topic A, B, and C, if you've only cited B and C in your text, they want you to know that you still read the other author A, so a bibliography can be important in those cases.

In other referencing styles, thinking like Chicago or modern humanities, the reference list is called the bibliography. So that is the list of all of the sources that you've cited there. So it depends on the referencing style you're using.

It depends on how much detail your tutor wants you to give about the things you haven't directly cited, but you've read as part of your research.

A reference list allows the reader to see the breadth of research you have conducted on the subject you are studying.

That's true. It does indeed. And that is exactly it. It provides evidence of the breadth, the context that you are being accurate in answering the question that's been asked, that you're providing for evidence. And in doing so, you're avoiding plagiarism.

So you've covered the aspect. You're providing a full reference list of all the items that you've looked at. And it's always worth reminding students that at the end of their assignment to spend some time checking through that reference list, because many times it can be very easy.

What you have to do is check back with your citations so that a citation makes sure that that citation has its full reference list and vice versa.

So if there's a reference in the reference list, make sure it has its corresponding citation within the text as well.

Yeah. And I think that's one thing to emphasise is the reference list is not a chore. It's showing how all the research that you've done, you're telling your reader this is you're going to get a good read, because I've covered all of these major authors, these theories.
