Academic Services Manager, Ian Clark We visited the University of East London to speak to about what makes Cite Them Right an important tool for their students.
Ian explained how it's so important for students to understand how to reference their sources correctly so they don't fall foul of things like plagiarism, and how Cite Them Right gives clear examples of how to reference correctly in all the different referencing styles that the university uses. Kari Morley, Academic Services Manager - How was your experience rolling out the product?
The technological roll out was very simple as Cite Them Right was already embedded in many of the database and systems we use at ARU such as RefWorks, and Primo so this wasn’t difficult at all.
- When and how do you raise awareness of the product?
Students are told which referencing styles they should be using right from the start of their courses, usually during library induction sessions, and are reminded throughout their time studying with us. They are provided with demonstrations of how to use the system from the start of their time with us and have the option to attend workshops at any point during the academic year.
Our Subject Librarians provide training on referencing throughout the year during timetabled sessions and bookable workshops, which all include demonstrations and reminders of how to use the Cite Them Right website.
Module leaders also include details of which referencing style students should use in their assignments to their module pages, which all link to the guidance on Cite Them Right available from the library’s web pages.
Reminders were also sent out to Faculties via email and on the staff intranet around marking time to ensure tutors knew to use the new style when marking student work.

Subscribing to Cite Them Right has made referencing much simpler for our students and staff by providing clear guidance with fewer variations than our previous style.
The website itself is really easy to access and very user friendly which made the whole process effortless. The tutorials and videos provide simple access to support 24/7 which is great for our students.
